Real Madrid are the new Laliga Santander Champions. Los blancos’ journey towards winning the title has been like a roller coaster.
Real Madrid had declared laliga Santander their main objective this season. And had produced mixed performances earlier in the season.
The club from Madrid had missed many chances to run clear of a free falling Barcelona side.
Zinedine Zidane got his boys to play like a team, with their defensive displays particularly worthy of praise.
Los Blancos began to fail at the start of the new year, with Benzema’s goals running dry, Eden Hazard always at the hospital, Gareth Bale disinterested, Vinicius and Rodrygo still developing.
The only thing that kept Zdiane’s men in the title contention was their impressive defensive performances.
On February 9, 2020, Real Madrid won 4-1 away over Osasuna. Followed by a 1-0 away loss to Levante.
On 26th February, Los blancos suffered a painful home defeat to Manchester City in the first leg of the Champions League knockout round.
Zidane’s men went on to beat eternal rivals, Barcelona in the second classico of the season. Then fell to another 2-1 defeat to Real Betis.
Los Blancos’ 2-1 defeat against Betis handed Barcelona a 2 points lead in the league standing heading into the Covid-19 break.
Given how Barcelona have been abysmal this season, it would have been a dirty slap on the face of Real Madrid if their rival had gone on to win the title.
And then came the pandemic. A virus that ‘paused the world’, a three month hiatus.
Then Real Madrid came back with a bang, with five substitutes allowed, a team like Real Madrid was always going have an edge over it’s rivals.
Aside having a large squad , the royal whites had used the break to recharge their batteries. With players like Ramos and Modric returning in very impressive physical conditions.
Los Blancos went on to win 10 of their 11 Laliga games while Barcelona continued to falter.
The Madrid based club had no need to use the head-head advantage they had over Barcelona.
With rock solid defensive performances and excellent goal keeping from Courtois. Real Madrid were able to grind out wins even when they didn’t play well.
The Coronavirus pandemic has led to games being played behind closed doors with clubs losing substantial amount of money, Real Madrid inclusive. But Los Blancos gained something in return.
Real Madrid already won the Spanish super cup earlier this season and have now added the Laliga Santander title. Whatever happens in the Champions League, this season is already a big success for Los Blancos.
With the wonderful turn of events after the restart. For Real Madrid, the coronavirus hiatus is a blessing in disguise.
