Mason Greenwood: this is just the beginning

Mason Greenwood

On october 1 2001, a certain Mason Will John Greenwood was born in Bradford, st Yorkshire .

Mason Greenwood joined Manchester United at the age of six, playing at the club’s development school in Halifax.

Progressing through the academy ranks, he joined up with the Under-18 squad for the 2017–18 season , despite being eligible for the Under-16s, and finished as top scorer of the under-18 Premier League North with 17 goals in 21 games.

In May 2018, Mason Greenwood was named Player of the Tournament as the youth side won the ICGT Trophy in the Netherlands.

In December 2018, he was selected by José Mourinho to train with the first team ahead of a UEFA Champions League match against Valencia.

On 6 March 2019, under the management of Ole Gunnar Solskjær , Mason Greenwood made his competitive debut as an 87th-minute substitute for Ashley Young in a 3–1 win against Paris Saint Germain in the UEFA Champions League.

At the age of 17 years and 156 days, he became the second youngest player to represent the club in a European competition (only behind Norman Whiteside ) and the youngest ever in the Champions League era.

Four days later, he made his Premier League debut from the bench in a 2–0 defeat to Arsenal to become one of the club’s youngest league debutants.

On 12 May, the final day of the season, Mason Greenwood made his first senior start for the club in a 2–0 defeat to Cardiff City .

On 17 July 2019, the under-21 England international scored his first senior goal for Manchester United in a 4–0 pre-season victory against Leeds United , and followed it up with his second in United’s friendly against Inter Milan.

He began the season making substitute appearances in each of United’s first four league matches, before starting the Europa League opener against Kazahkstani side Astana on 19 September; he scored the only goal of the game to become the club’s youngest ever goal scorer in European competition at the age of 17 years, 353 days.

The 18 year old started his career as a midfielder , but slowly turned into a forward and has even received comparisons with Robin Van persie.

Mason Greenwood moves the ball around with elegance and composure, something few players of his age can boast about.

His ability to use both feet is impressive, meaning he can and does play in any position on the pitch.

Ole Gunnar in 2019 said : ” he can play anywhere across the front three positions, even as a number 10. He is just a natural when he takes a penalty with his right and takes a penalty with his left, free-kicks with his left, free-kicks with his right. He is almost what you’d call a ’50-50, may be 51-49, left-footed”.

His maturity and composure in front of goal is appealing, as he demonstrated in a ‘5-2’ thriller against Bournemouth on saturday.

Mason Greenwood restored parity for Manchester United with a powerful left-footed effort in the 29th minute, before adding a Second in the 54th, with his right. Marcus Rashford, Bruno Fernandes and Anthony Martial also got their names on the score sheet, in what was an overall impressive performance from the teenager and his Manchester united teammates.

His ability to put the ball in the back of the net has not gone unnoticed by his coach .”I have seen Wayne Rooney at the same age and Mason is a specialist finisher and specialist goal scorer he knows exactly what to do with the ball when he’s on the pitch .

“If he shoots he will score, he is going to get better
and his general play has improved.”

With another academy graduate making a name for himself, Manchester united’s faith in their youngsters seems to be paying off.

At just 18, the ability to finish with both feet, his brilliance, and his hunger for the game, clearly indicates that the best is yet to come from Mason Greenwood.

At this point, it is not unreasonable to believe that for Mason Greenwood, it’s just the beginning.
